Not long ago, I was surprised to see Anushka Sharma chopping off her long-luscious locks straight to shoulder-length hair. I was surprised because to me, she looked better with long hair. On further scrolling down to the caption. I found out it was a 'post baby hair fall' post! Don't get me wrong here. I am not ignorant about postparfum changes in women but this particular instagram post encouraged me to place All the occurrences around postparfum hair fall issues in one place. This is what today's blog intends to serve.


Here's a widely known fact for you : humans shed nearly 80 to 100 hair strands every day. But did you know that the number goes up to 400 in women post-pregnancy? Now, that's a number that is sure to bring stress to most women, another reason to add up to the anxiety triggering more hair fall. Vicious cycle, isn't it?


What is postparfum hair fall?


It is a natural process of shedding excessive hair that women experience post parturition or childbirth. Several factors contribute to it combinedly. However, it is not a true hair loss -- it is temporary condition found in women. In the medical world, the phenomenon is termed 'postparfum Alopecia' -- the diffuse shedding of scalp hair that may start 2 to 5 months following childbirth. Typically, the hair fall slows down 6 to 9 months form the delivery, and complete reversal of the hair fall happens within one and a half years.


Studies have suggested that present-day women experience more physical complications and poorermental health. post-pregnancy that women in the past. The possible reason behind it is that adults today are less "metabolically" healthy that their counterparts of the previous generation.


Factors that leaed to the severe hair fall

  1. Lowered levels of estrogen and variations in progesterone level after parturition lead to hair fall. As mentioned earlier, this i a temporary phase : hair growth begins after the hormonal level goes back to its normalcy.

  2. During pregnancy, the increased hormonal levels cause speedy hair growth in women, thereby pausing the hair shedding. However, after parturition, with the decreased estrogen levels in the body, the hair fall resumes. Scientifically, this condition is called "Telogen Effluvium", where temporary hair loss occurs due to the excessive shedding of "telogen" or resting hair after experiencing hormonal disbalance.

  3. Women experience postparfum depression due to physical and emotional changes, which has mostly to do with the changing sleep cycle. Sleeplessness is a common occurrence post-delivery.

  4. Many women fail to take proper nourishment post-delivery as most of their time is invested in the newborn. This can be bad for hair health. Efforts should be taken to get protein, iron and vitamin-rich food.

  5. New-made mothers who have thyroid disorders are more susceptible to the postparfum hair fall.


Ways to reduce postparfum hair fall

  1. Following a healthy food habit by eating food rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber.

  2. Taking proper sleep and giving sufficient rest to your body.

  3. Performing relaxing activites such as breathing exercises, reading, listening to music and more.

  4. Avoid using hot water for hair wash, as it further weakens the hair root.

  5. Taking as much hair oil massage as possible, as it helpos in hair nourishment.

In conclusion, postpartum hair fall can be a stressfull experience. This makes it imperative for us to understand the situation completely. It is a known fact that new-made mothers should avoid taking medicines as everything they eat is directly passed down to the babies. Therefore, it is wiser to take topical treatmens---in the form of oil massage to hair--- to cure postparfum hair fall.
